Wealth and poverty maps

An ancillary objective of the Centre for Hearth Tax Research is to produce a complete wealth and poverty parish map for seventeenth century England. For each county, an historical GIS parish map is being produced and these will then build into a national base map upon which the statistical analysis of the hearth tax can be mapped. All the cartographical resources employed by the Centre for Hearth Tax Research are produced by Mike Shand at the University of Glasgow.

The wealth and poverty maps produced by the Centre for Hearth Tax Research, and made available through Hearth Tax Online, allow for a broad but immediate and striking assessment of economic distribution across a county. Coupled with the topographical, geological and terrain maps, a fuller picture of settlement and community structure can be then be assessed in relation to household income and living standards.
